Jets dumped by Avs, Dillon badly cut

Mike McIntyre 9 minute read Updated: 1:02 AM CDT

DENVER — They lost their lead. They lost their composure. They lost the game. And they may have lost a key player to an ugly injury.

Add it all up and it was a Friday night to forget for the Winnipeg Jets, who now find themselves trailing their first-round playoff series 2-1 following a 6-2 defeat to the Colorado Avalanche at Ball Arena.

Winnipeg appeared to be in full control through 40 minutes, carrying a hard-fought 2-1 advantage into the second intermission. All they needed was one more solid period to wrestle home-ice advantage back from Colorado after a split of the first two games at Canada Life Centre.

It was easier said than done. A parade to the penalty box and an inability to get a kill proved fatal, with the home team scoring five times in the final frame to absolutely bury them.

Winkler Flyers ride OT victory to first MJHL title in 26 years

The Winkler Flyers scratched a 26-year itch Friday night.

Spurred on by a boisterous sellout crowd of 1,300 at Centennial Arena, the Flyers captured their first Turnbull Cup title since 1998 with a 5-4 overtime triumph over the Steinbach Pistons.

Zach Nicolas’ sixth goal of the MJHL post-season, coming during a 5-on-3 power play 4:59 into extra time, allowed Winkler to sweep the best-of-seven MJHL final from the defending league champs.

“It’s huge — not just for the team, not just for the coaching staff but the community here,” said Nicolas. “They’ve been waiting a long time and we brought it in this year.”

DENVER - Back-to-back power-play goals early in the third period turned the game for the Colorado Avalanche on Friday night.

By the time the host side was done, they scored three more times, set the physical tone and made a statement with an emphatic 6-2 rout of the Winnipeg Jets to take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven first-round playoff series.

"We obviously let their pretty potent power play have some opportunities and they capitalized," said Jets defenceman Josh Morrissey.

Winnipeg led 2-1 after 40 minutes but things unravelled quickly as Colorado scored three times within a six-minute span. Nathan MacKinnon and Valeri Nichushkin got the rally started and Artturi Lehkonen gave Colorado a two-goal cushion.

DENVER —There’s no question Cale Makar is breathing some rarefied hockey air while playing here in the Mile High City. Might the Colorado Avalanche defenceman ultimately be among the best to ever lace up the skates and hit the ice at his position? We here at Dump & Chase certainly think he’s in the conversation, even if his coach tried to stickhandle around the question Friday. DAVID ZALUBOWSKI / THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Colorado Avalanche defenceman Cale Makar already has a Stanley Cup, Norris Trophy and Conn Smythe Trophy on his resume. “I mean, comparing players from different eras is always […]

DENVER (AP) — Winnipeg Jets defenseman Brenden Dillon quickly made his way down the tunnel with his hand bleeding after a fight at the end of the game against the Colorado Avalanche on Friday night.

Dillon suffered what appeared to be a deep cut following a 6-2 loss in Game 3 of their first-round series. The Jets had no update on Dillon after the game or if the injury might have happened because of a skate blade.

“He’s still being examined,” Jets coach Rick Bowness said.

Asked if there was a lot of concern seeing a player get hurt like that, Bowness said, “Yeah, when you see the blood, yeah.”

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Marvin Harrison Jr., Joe Alt, Kris Jenkins, Jonah Ellis and Luke McCaffrey have turned the NFL draft into a family affair.

The sons of former pro football stars, they've followed their fathers' formidable footsteps into the league.

Elliss was selected by the Denver Broncos in the third round Friday night. His father, Luther Ellis, was once the NFL's highest-paid defensive tackle while playing for Detroit for nine seasons. He played one final season with Denver in 2004. In 2015, Luther served as team chaplain for the Broncos in their last Super Bowl season.

“Actually, I don't remember too many of his highlights, but I do remember when we moved out to Colorado,” Jonah Elliss said. “I spent a year there. It was really awesome just to see my dad start to get back into football, even though he was just the chaplain at the time. So, it was awesome seeing him do that. And I'm really excited to come down there where he was.”

Pacers take series lead beating Bucks 121-118 in OT

The Associated Press 3 minute read 12:40 AM CDT

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Tyrese Haliburton completed a three-point play with 1.6 seconds left, capping his first postseason triple-double in his first home playoff game to give the Indiana Pacers a 121-118 overtime victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday night.

Indiana leads the best-of-seven series 2-1, with Game 4 on Sunday in Indianapolis. Two-time league MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo again sat out for Milwaukee because of a strained left calf.

Haliburton had 18 points, 16 assists and 10 rebounds. Myles Turner added 29 points and nine rebounds, both playoff career highs, to help give Indiana its first back-to-back postseason wins since taking three straight in the 2014 Eastern Conference semifinals.

The Pacers also have their first lead in the playoffs since Game 3 of a first-round matchup against Cleveland in 2018. Indiana hasn’t won a series since reaching the 2014 Eastern Conference finals.

Draisaitl, Hyman lead Oilers to 6-1 rout of Kings to take 2-1 series lead

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Edmonton's Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl continue to cause Los Angeles nightmares. As if that isn't enough, the rest of the Oilers' lineup is beginning to add to the Kings' frustrations.

McDavid and Draisaitl had three-point nights on Friday, but Zach Hyman continued his hot streak at the start of the postseason with two goals as the Oilers rode the momentum of three first-period scores to a 6-1 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Friday night to take a 2-1 lead in their first-round NHL playoffs series.

“Anytime you get up on a ream that's defensive and doesn't give you much makes it easier on you,” said Hyman, who has a league-leading six postseason goals and seven points. “You don't have to force it in, you can play your game and they have to change and open things up. We did a good job of that.”

Game 4 in the best-of-seven series is Sunday night.
